Upstream's Film Critic. Will He Solve The Mystery Of Angebot Aus Schenectady?

In its ongoing effort to provide our readers with a wide variety of information, Upstream has added a film critic to its “staff.” Our critic, David Weaver, graduated from Fulton-Montgomery Community College with a 4.0 average. He then took a nine week crash course in film making at The New York Film Academy, where he made several short films. He is currently working at Wal-Mart and waiting to hear whether or not he has been accepted into the film program at SUNY Purchase.

David has a huge collection of films, both old and contemporary. His reviews will focus on whatever he is watching at the time, whether in the theater, on television or on DVD. From time to time, he will review films that focus on Upstate New York, such as Fort Ti, The Last of the Mohicans, Saratoga Trunk and Ironweed.

His real challenge, however, will be to investigate and let us know what the movie, Angebot Aus Schenectady, is all about. So far I have discovered that the title means Offer From Schenectady, but I can’t even find a plot summary. A professor at Union College who is an expert in German Film, was unable to enlighten me on the plot. Maybe the writer or director was just fascinated by the word Schenectady as so many people are, like the author of the book, It Came From Schenectady.

Anyway, if you only rely on what the critics on television or in the newspapers tell you to watch, you are missing out on a lot of good movies. David’s reviews will point you to movies you might never have thought about watching.

  • It would seem to me that the movie may have something to do with Thomas Edison's offer to Charles Steinmetz to "come to work with him" in Schenectady. N'cest Pas?

  • Did you or Dave ever find out the plot of "Angebot Aus Schenectady"?
Since you say the translation is "Offer from Schenectady" I'm curious to know if it was, in fact, Edison's invitation to Steinmetz that the movie was about.
